Plot; Mathimaaran, a crime reporter who insists on speaking truth to power, is at the center of the narrative. He is continuing the legacy of his father Sathyamoorthy (Ramki), who passed away after publishing an exposé. He is utterly fearless and simply concerned with telling the truth. He exposes a scheme involving phony EVMs being planned by former minister Pazhani (Samuthirakani), who is attempting to recapture his previous glory, with the assistance of his cop pal Arjun (KK, effective). But Maaran seemed to have overlooked his sister Shwetha’s safety (Smruthi)
The movie tries to appear sophisticated, but all that comes out is a predictable and boring thriller. When Maaran was announced almost two years ago, there was a lot of anticipation because it was the first time Dhanush and Karthick Naren, who is thought of as one of the most intriguing modern filmmakers working in Tamil cinema today, would be working together. In contrast to his two earlier full-length movies, Dhruvangal 16 and Mafia, Maaran doesn’t even come close to impressing with its gorgeous presentation. The plot has predictable turns, and the antagonist has little to no impact. As a result, no one is interested in watching the movie. Dhanush’s performance has to be the element that works in Maaran’s favor.
Malavika, who plays Tara, also works at the same office. She doesn’t know exactly what she’s doing, but she saw her taking pictures in one scene, so we can assume she’s a photojournalist. The character of is not well written. She has no role other than clinging to him wherever Dhanush goes. The scene between the two actors is terrible. Smruthi Venkat (film Swetha) reprise the role of sister following Mookuthi Amman. The scene between Smruthi and Dhanush is superficial, but she makes it compelling with her acting. Director Amir Sultan plays an important character in this film. Unfortunately, the film doesn’t really grab the audience’s attention until the third act. None of the characters has a scene where you can empathize. Dhanush is a good actor, but even he can’t save this train wreck from the movie.
Verdict; Maaran doesn’t even come close to outshining his two previous full-length films, Dhruvangal 16 and Mafia, in terms of exquisite presentation. Film doesn’t meet expectations from Dhanush or Karthick Naren Movies!
