Gist of the Story
The main character and his buddies elude the authorities by hiding a bag filled with cash and valuables in a spooky home. When he tries to get the bag, a ghost forces him to take part in a survival game in order to get the bag.
Detailed Plot
The central focus of the horror comedy-drama DD Returns, which is centered on their ghostly encounters, is the Fernandes family. After looting millions of rupees and wanting a place to hide, a group of criminals unknowingly break into the Fernandes’ home. The ghosts have been waiting for someone to play with them, so they are eager to go to work. The sole door in the home was used by the burglars to enter, but they were unable to leave until they discovered the only escape. They will either be killed by the ghosts or be confined within the mansion forever if they can’t find the entrance. Santhanam and his crew, however, are not frightened of ghosts and can simply find the door and exit the home despite everything the phantoms hurl at them. The conclusion of the film felt inescapable, but the journey there was what was dramatic. The movie’s tension was greatly aided by the characters’ interactions with the ghosts, Santhanam’s humorous timing, and the crew’s management of supernatural elements.
Artistes’ Performances
With flawless comedic timing and amusing one-liners, Santhanam commands the ensemble cast. He occasionally succeeds without making a lot of effort in quiet heroic moments. In fact, after a while, all of his comedic jabs are effective and bring the house down. Surabhi, who has a hint of grey in her personality, does okay in her role as the love interest. The movie has several well-known comedians, and fortunately for the movie, most of them have succeeded in making the humour work almost everywhere. Like these artists, Munishkanth, Redin Kingsley, Pazhaya Joke Thangadurai, and Motta Rajendran have all been given an equal opportunity to fulfil their potential.
Direction / Technical Side
The absurd premise is introduced early in the film by director Prem Anand, but it isn’t until the intermission that he really explores the potential of the weird horror-comedy aspect. However, the first half is mostly pleasant despite a few potentially funny spots that fall flat. With its level-following level structure, the second half is similar to watching a game show. By doing so, the scenarios are varied and the screenplay naturally incorporates humor. The parts that are meant to evoke amusement are staged effectively with just the appropriate amount of crazy, which distinguishes DD Returns from the numerous unsuccessful attempts in this genre. The movie deftly avoids the “cringe,” which is common in most horror comedies. The utilization of simple devices like the Hoover hose and the perplexing maze doors has been deftly planned and used for laughs as much as possible.
The horror aspect doesn’t provide much in the Dhilluku Dhuddu franchise’s storylines, though, since the comic angle is the one that is pursued all the way to the conclusion, as those who are familiar with the series are aware. While some comedies are successful, others fall flat. Everything in the film works because of the performers’ electric chemistry. The movie is saved from entering the lengthy list of horror comedies that Kollywood cranks out every year by a few humorous scenes in the second half. The cinematographer did a nice job of keeping a consistent color scheme throughout, and the maze segments and the library scene are both well-captured. By keeping the running time to 2 hours, the editing is crisp. Rich production values have been added to the project by K Entertainment.
Verdict;
DD Returns’ first half is enjoyable even though some of the humor scenes fall flat at times. A level-following structure that includes humor and a variety of situations is used in the second half making it interesting. Overall; The film works despite several flaws because of the lead actors’ explosive rapport with each other!
