Gist of the Story

Appatha, who is terrified of dogs, is tasked with caring for her son’s pet dog while they are away. Is she going to be able to overcome her fear forms the crux of the story?

Detailed Plot

With exclusively female employees and the assistance of Sakthi, played by Siddharth Babu, Appatha, nicknamed Kannama, manages a tiny pickle-making business in Kaayilanpatti. Appatha is a hard-working widow, a smart, and a powerful individual. In addition to assisting the village ladies in filling out paperwork and teaching them to be courageous, she also provides advice to women in the community. Amit Bhargav, who plays Pavvadai Sami, the son of Appatha, resides in Chennai with his wife, kid, and their gorgeous dog Zeus. The bond between Appatha and her son was always strained. Given that they come from a low-income home, her kid felt ashamed of her and her pickle company. The story begins when Kannama’s son invites her to stay with them in Chennai. Apatha is ecstatic to see her son and believes he misses her and wants to spend more time with her, but in truth, he merely called to ask her to watch for his dog Zeus while the family goes on vacation. Since she was bitten as a young child, Appatha’s only real fear is of dogs. The central question of the story is whether she will be able to conquer her fear.

Artistes’ Performances

Urvashi’s portrayal of the character is truly mesmerizing. The way she effortlessly transitions from a compassionate individual to a mischievous and archetypal grandmother is truly remarkable. Her vocal modulation adds a touch of authenticity to the character’s transformation, even though the dramatic elements in the writing may sometimes appear irrational. Her portrayal of the character is absolutely enchanting and leaves a lasting impression on the audience. Her ability to bring the character to life is truly exceptional and commendable. However, it is a shame that Amit Bhargav’s character lacks depth as the audience is only exposed to his disdain for his mother’s fondness for pickles. It would have been interesting to explore more facets of his persona.

Direction / Technical Side

Urvashi, an accomplished actor, has already completed her 700th film assignment with Appatha. Urvashi and director Priyadarshan reunited for their film “Appatha” after 28 years down. The dialogues are the heart and soul of “Appatha,” achieving the ideal harmony between humour and profundity of feeling. Each scene may breathe and develop naturally thanks to the film’s well-planned pacing. For these reasons, Appatha isn’t a particularly strong movie. First off, the struggle between Appatha and Zeus and that of Appatha and her son seem to alternate throughout the comedic play. The movie contains many scenes that are rather predictable. With a terrific Urvashi, without whom the movie would have been a disaster, Appatha is the kind of entertainment you can watch, laugh, and then forget.

Appatha falls under the category of predictable films with a very formulaic style. These types of films usually follow a set pattern, making it easy to anticipate the storyline and outcomes. While some viewers may enjoy the familiarity and find comfort in the repetitive nature of such movies, others may seek more original and innovative content. Nonetheless, Appatha’s adherence to this kind of approach gives it a certain charm that appeals to a specific audience. The film utilizes well-established storytelling techniques, relying on tried and tested formulas to deliver its narrative. Although it may not offer groundbreaking or unconventional storytelling, Appatha manages to cater to those who appreciate the comfort and entertainment value that predictable films provide. So, if you’re looking for a movie that stays within the confines of a well-known formula, Appatha is a film that fits the bill.

Verdict;

Although predictable, Appatha’s charm appeals to audiences who appreciate the comfort and entertainment value of predictable films. The film uses well-established storytelling techniques and relies on tried and tested formulas, making it a suitable choice for those seeking comfort. Urvashi’s portrayal of the character is absolutely enchanting and leaves a lasting impression on the audience.
