Detailed Plot
A tragic Christmas Eve night is shown in Merry Christmas, when Albert (Vijay Sethupathi), as he says, has returned to Mumbai from Dubai and discovers that his mother has passed away. He visits a posh restaurant to reward himself while strolling through Bombay, which is now Mumbai. His route eventually intersects with Maria’s (Katrina), who has been rejected by her date since she brought her daughter along. Their brief looks exchanged, they reconnected inside a theater. As events unfold, Albert finds himself at Maria’s dilapidated apartment, only to become entangled in a crime scene moments thereafter. Despite the fact that he may leave at any time, he chooses to stay and assist Maria in solving her problems. This dreamy romance amid a murder investigation provides numerous delicious moments and establishes the mood for Raghavan’s Merry Christmas.
Artistes’ Performances
The fact that Vijay Sethupathi portrays a Tamilian in the movie as Albert means that the accent is never truly a problem. All of his less talkative characters have a certain timidity about them, and Sriram Raghavan makes good use of that. With the viewer, Albert is a character that essentially explores the entire narrative. You will feel empathy for the character in your heart because of Sethupathi’s portrayal of that inquiry.
In her role as the terrified spouse, Katrina Kaif is quite believable, particularly when the character exudes confidence. Less talking and largely via their physical interactions, the main protagonists’ relationship develops. Along with Sanjay Kapoor and Vinay Pathak, Radhika Apte makes a brief appearance.
Direction / Technical Side
Sriram Raghavan is the director of the neo-noir thriller Merry Christmas, which stars Katrina Kaif and Vijay Sethupathi in the key parts. The Christmas Eve fortuitous encounter between two strangers, which sets off a chain of bizarre and unexpected occurrences, is the central theme of the movie. The movie is a slow-burning mystery with some unexpected turns and reveals that keep viewers wondering until the very end. With breathtaking photography, music, and art design, the film highlights the technical mastery and inventiveness of Sriram Raghavan and his crew. Along with its heartwarming moments, the movie also features some funny ones, particularly in the early part when Vijay Sethupathi and Katrina Kaif’s connection is evident.
But the movie has its shortcomings as well. The pacing is erratic and sluggish, and the narrative is weak and uncoherent. Although the movie makes an attempt to strike a balance between comedy, drama, and fantasy, it is unable to produce a compelling story. A few of the sentences are forced and cliched, and the characters are shallow and undeveloped. The lack of emotional resonance and effect in the movie is another issue, since the viewer is unable to identify with either the heroes or their allies. There are a lot of unsolved questions at the film’s hazy and unsatisfying conclusion.
Verdict;
A visually stunning and thrilling picture, Merry Christmas is bold and unorthodox overall, yet it lacks entertainment value and storyline. Some who enjoy mystery and neo-noir films could find the movie interesting, but others who are looking for a compelling story with well-developed characters might find themselves let down. The film is best enjoyed as a one-time watch rather than a memorable experience.
