Gist of the Story
Vinu, also known as Dhavan Vinu, is our hero in Corona Dhavan, which is set against the backdrop of the Anathadam village. Film focuses on the struggles that a group of alcoholics go through during the COVID-19 lockdown.
Detailed Plot
Vinu, portrayed by the talented actor Lukman Avaran, takes on the role of the protagonist. As the story unfolds, we are introduced to Vinu’s ardent desire to ensure that his sister’s wedding is nothing short of magical. However, fate had something different in store for him. Determined to make the occasion truly memorable, Vinu embarks on an unconventional adventure to secure an ample supply of alcohol for the wedding festivities. Little did he know that these 30 litres of alcohol would become the talk of the town and the center of attention, sparking a chain of unexpected events. Set against the backdrop of a pandemic-induced lockdown, the film beautifully captures the essence of the trying times we have all endured. From the necessity of wearing masks to adhering to social distancing measures, the story delves into the challenges faced by ordinary individuals during this turbulent period. The scarcity of basic commodities and the closure of bars and Bevco shops made alcohol particularly precious, and Vinu inadvertently found himself becoming the sole source of hope for the entire community. The film artfully portrays the efforts made by the villagers to obtain a precious bottle from Vinu, reflecting the desperation and resourcefulness that gripped society.
Artistes’ Performances
Vinu, played by Lukman Avaran, gives a strong performance, and he has little trouble fitting into the Thrissur setting. The acting of Sarath Sabha as Sumesh stands out in the film, and it’s entertaining to watch how he conveys humour through simple facial gestures. Johny Antony arrives in his often usual manner. In his comedic avatar, Irshad was fantastic as the policeman. But Sreenath Bhasi, who is generally dependable, shrinks to a one-note figure.
Direction / Technical Side
C. Nidhi is the director of Corona Dhawan, a film that delves into the intricacies of a pandemic world. The plot of Corona Dhawan is indeed an intriguing concept, as it offers a unique perspective on our current reality. The film examines the impact of the pandemic on various aspects of life, ranging from personal relationships to the socio-economic landscape. As the narrative unfolds, viewers are taken on a nostalgic journey, reminiscing about the struggles faced during that tumultuous period. From the incessant COVID testing to the constant sanitizing and the presence of drones monitoring gatherings, the film encapsulates the surreal reality of living through a pandemic. However, while the concept is promising, there seems to be a struggle within Sujai Mohanraj’s script to forge a strong connection between the multiple subplots that have been developed. As the story unfolds, the audience is left yearning for a deeper exploration of the characters’ emotions and a more nuanced portrayal of the challenges they face. One aspect that seems to be missing is a serious turn or a deeper examination of the terrifying aspects of the pandemic. While the film touches on some of the consequences and struggles, it falls short of truly capturing the fear, uncertainty, and grief that engulfed the world during such times. Despite these shortcomings, Corona Dhawan still manages to capture the audience’s attention with its one liners & some comic scenes.
Verdict;
“Corona Dhawan,” a simple film that entertains its respective audience with its witty situations and humor-filled one-liners. The screenplay by Sujai Mohanraj creates relatable comedic scenes & characters. However “Corona Dhawan” faces challenges in its structure due to its multiple subplots with lot of characters and storylines. While adding depth, the transitions could have been smoother. This occasionally leads to a slight sense of disjointedness that may leave some viewers wanting more cohesion in the storytelling.
