Gist of the Story
On the verge of retirement, Subramani ignores advice to investigate the disappearance of Selvarasu’s grandmother. Subramani gets himself caught in a tumultuous maelstrom of problems, and everything goes horribly bad.
Detailed Plot
Subramani, a duty-conscious constable, is on the verge of retiring due to his truthfulness. A young boy and three ladies arrive at the police station to report a missing person, Tanga Ponnu (Rohini). They all seek the same person, an old woman who left home voluntarily. The girls are the ladies on the hunt for her, and a relative, a boy, is a relative. The police show little interest in filing a complaint or providing assistance, but Subramani agrees to help. He goes with his grandson to the hamlet to look for his grandmother. The young boy informs the officer that his aunts are searching for his mother, not because they love her but because she may have valuable “Thandatti” earrings. As they return to Hamlet, the boy claims that all aunts are searching for their mother and that everyone is covertly attempting to steal the earrings. Thandatti is about what transpires after that.
Artistes’ Performances
Pasupathi has a great performance as the police head of a small town that carries the entire film. Even if he doesn’t seem completely at ease in the comedic scenes, he gives the movie a sincere performance and maintains emotional stability throughout. Rohini’s superb performance, which is a significant bonus, and the other supporting actors, like Deepa and Vivek Prasanna, who are wonderful fits, highlight the supporting cast.
Direction / Technical Side
The title Thandatti refers to a pair of gold ear jewels, and the plot of the movie revolves around what happens after they vanish from the corpse of an elderly woman. The movie recounts the struggles of a small-town officer who is abandoned by his squad but yet persists in carrying out his duty, in contrast to the typical cop stories we’ve seen where the uniform inspires respect. Even though the second half of the movie is fully devoted to the search for the Thandatti, it’s amazing that the filmmaker presents the history of the ornament much earlier and lets us relate to it. The pivotal flashback in Thandatti, which portrays a youthful Ammu Abhirami as Thangaponnu, is unquestionably the film’s finest. The flashback solidifies the emotional explanation for why Thandatti is her prized possession and the object of her dying wish. The humor in the second half also succeeds to a certain extent despite the gravity of the circumstance. Additionally, the humor, which is the film’s strength, overdoes it occasionally and causes us to veer from the plot’s progression.
Theni Paka’s beauty and grief have been masterfully caught by Mahesh Muthuswamy’s photography. The melodies and music of Sundaramurthy are adequate. At times the background music is over the top and other times it is catchy. The film’s editing could have used a bit more attention. Although the message Thandatti wants to portray is extremely powerful and noble, the way it is done isn’t particularly effective.
Verdict; The film’s flashback, solidifies the emotional connection with Thandatti. The humor in the second half succeeds but sometimes overshadows the plot’s progression. Despite, the shortcomings Thandatti is a fairly engaging film that has its moments.
